For U-10 hockey players, the transition from the U-8 level marks a critical shift in their athletic development. While U-8 is often about falling down and getting back up, U-10 is the dawn of what coaches call the "Golden Age of Skill Acquisition." At this age, a player's nervous system is incredibly plastic, making it the prime window to master complex edgework. Without a deep understanding of how to use both inside and outside edges, a player will eventually hit a "skating ceiling." They may be fast in a straight line, but as the game becomes more positional and physical, the ability to pivot, transition from backward to forward, and maintain stability through contact becomes the true differentiator between average and elite players.

The Graduation Gap: Losing the Fundamentals
One of the most common pitfalls occurs immediately after players graduate from U-8. At the Mite level, practices are almost entirely focused on basic movements and fun, repetitive drills. However, once players move to U-10, the introduction of full-ice games, complex team systems, and "win-focused" mentalities often shifts the focus away from individual mechanics.

Many young athletes begin to "cheat" their skating to keep up with the play. Because team practices are now consumed by positional drills, these foundational flaws go uncorrected, and by the time a player reaches U-12, these "bad habits" are deeply ingrained and significantly harder to fix.

Why Summer Training is Essential
The summer months offer a unique opportunity to strip the game back to its core. Away from the pressure of team play and the scoreboard, players can focus on isolated mechanics. Summer training allows for:

  • Commitment to Correction: NateSkate Summer Camps are designed specifically for the development of players' stride and edgework, where players are afforded time and commitment to master their skating.

  • Removing the Stick: Working on edgework without a puck or stick forces the player to find balance through their core and lower body rather than using the stick as a "third leg."

  • High Repetition: NateSkate Summer Camps design our sessions to provide hundreds of edge-specific repetitions that a typical team practice simply cannot match.

Developing these skills in the off-season ensures that when the fall/winter season arrives, the mechanics are second nature.

As always, NateSkate camps incorporate our core-4 principles:

  • Skating as the foundation

  • Growth through competition

  • Fun by accomplishment

  • Size and value

NateSkate: Skating & Edgework

At our NateSkate: Skating & Edgework Camps, we believe that the difference between a good player and a great one isn't how fast they can skate in a straight line, it’s how they manage the game on their edges. Our program is designed to strip the game back to its most essential element: the blade-to-ice connection. By mastering foundational movements in a focused, high-repetition environment, players build the "auto-pilot" muscle memory needed to execute at game speed without ever having to look at their feet.

Like all of our camps, skaters will be required to bring their own jersey (jerseys are not provided) and t-shirts will be provided commemorating your achievement of conquering one of the most challenging skating sessions around!

Specialized Training for the Modern Player

No line skating! This is a core-principle for all NateSkate camps; simply put, we want these kids utilizing and moving as much as we can while they are on the ice. NateSkate: Skating & Edgework Camps focus on teaching techniques including:

  • Outside Edge Dominance: Understand the importance and building the confidence to lean into turns with proper balance and control with the "right" foot.

  • Linear & Lateral Crossovers: Increasing power output and "under-push" efficiency.

  • Agility & Pivots: Seamless forward-to-backward transitions without losing momentum.

  • Reactive Skating: Drills designed to improve first-step quickness and "stop-and-start" acceleration.

What to Expect: Inside the Session

When your athlete steps onto the ice for our skating and edgework sessions, they should expect a high-energy, "details-first" environment. This means sessions are broken down into specific segments that challenge a player’s balance, coordination, and comfort zone.

  • The Technical Breakdown: Every session begins with isolated edge "activation." This involves slow-speed, high-discipline movements, often without sticks, where players focus on finding their center of gravity and feeling the "bite" of their steel.

  • Progressive Loading: Once the mechanics are established, we add layers of difficulty. We move from stationary or slow-speed drills to high-intensity movements that incorporate transitions, tight turns, and explosive crossovers. We push players to the point where they are uncomfortable; in our sessions, falling down is a sign of progress.

  • Immediate Feedback: Our staff prioritizes "active correction," providing real-time feedback on body posture, knee bend, and ankle snap. We use visual demonstrations and simplified cues to ensure every player leaves the ice with a clear understanding of what they improved that day.

NateSkate: Defensive Skating & Development

Defense is the most skating-intensive position on the ice, requiring a unique blend of backward power, lateral mobility, and explosive transitions. At our NateSkate: Defensive Skating & Development Camps, we move beyond the basics to focus on the specialized footwork required to maintain tight gap control and shut down elite attackers.

Like all of our camps, skaters will be required to bring their own jersey (jerseys are not provided) and t-shirts will be provided commemorating your achievement of conquering one of the most challenging skating sessions around!

Precision Footwork for the Modern D-Man

A defenseman’s footwork is their primary weapon. During our sessions, we dive deep into the mechanics of active recovery and lateral "shuffling"- the skills that allow a defender to stay square to an attacker without getting beat wide. We focus heavily on the "transition game," perfecting the ability to pivot from backward to forward (and vice versa) without any loss of speed or "hiccups" in momentum. By mastering crossover starts and linear crossovers at the blue line, our players learn to close gaps instantly and dictate the pace of the game rather than simply reacting to it. Core skills we target at NateSkate: Defensive Skating & Development Camps:

  • Explosive Backward Power: Refining the backward C-cut and crossover to build elite speed in reverse.

  • Tight Gap Control: Learning the footwork needed to "take away the middle" and force attackers to the perimeter.

  • Escape Moves: Using deceptive edgework behind the net to shake forecheckers and create clean exits.

  • Net-Front Stability: Building the lower-body strength and "edge-lock" needed to win battles in the crease.

What to Expect: Inside the Defensive Session

Our NateSkate: Defensive Skating & Development sessions are built around the philosophy that a defenseman’s feet are their most important defensive tool. Unlike a standard skating clinic, these sessions are position-specific, meaning every drill is modeled after a real-game scenario a defender will face - whether it’s defending a 1-on-1, walking the blue line, or battling for a puck in the corner.

  • "Heavy Base" Foundation: We begin each session by establishing a lower center of gravity. Defensive skating requires additional stability than forward skating to absorb contact and change direction instantly. We focus on deep knee bend ("sitting" in their stance) and wide-track backward skating to ensure our defenders are "unshakeable" on their edges.

  • Building Reverse Momentum: Once the mechanics of the backward stride are established, we layer on the difficulty. We move from stationary "C-cut" patterns to high-intensity backward movements that incorporate rapid transitions, lateral pivots, and explosive backward crossovers. We push defenders to find their "falling point" - the exact limit where their edge-lean is deepest and their stride is widest. In our sessions, catching an edge or falling while moving in reverse is a sign of progress; it means the player is finally pushing past the "safe" zone to unlock true elite-level backward speed.

  • Immediate Feedback: Our staff prioritizes "active correction," providing real-time feedback on body posture, knee bend, and ankle snap. We use visual demonstrations and simplified cues to ensure every player leaves the ice with a clear understanding of what they improved that day.

NateSkate: Full-Ice Concepts

This summer skating session focuses on one of the hardest transitions in youth hockey - the graduation gap between U-8 half-ice practices and games into U-10 full-ice. The difficulty of this transition is amplified by moving away from 2 minute "buzzer" shifts into requiring fluid, on-the-fly, line changes. To make things even more complicated, U-10 introduces offsides and icing - as well as penalties and other infractions. At our NateSkate: Full-Ice Concepts, we provide the opportunity for graduating U-8 players (as well as soon-to-be graduating, and second birth year U-10 players) the opportunity to learn about the expectations of the U-10 level in a high-intensity development series of skates.

NateSkate: Full-Ice Concepts specifically works on flow-drills that utilize the majority of the ice rink, all while providing instruction that will align with the expectations of U-10 hockey.

Like all of our camps, skaters will be required to bring their own jersey (jerseys are not provided) and t-shirts will be provided commemorating your achievement of conquering one of the most challenging skating sessions around!

Full-Ice Concept Drills

Players need a better understanding of the fundamental positioning and expectations of the game. Drills are put together to work on full-ice breakouts, forecheck, neutral zone positioning, and more. These drills will be high-paced and push kids into understanding more advanced concepts.

During our sessions, we not only work on the concepts, but also the fundamental skating techniques required to perform these concepts. This means we don't just tell skaters where to go, but we also teach them how to best get there [i.e. breakout concepts with emphasis on opening up and transitioning quickly). Core elements of this camp include:

  • Contextual Skating Development: Linear speed, transition mechanics, angling

  • Positional Literacy: Breakout patterns, point/blue-line and zone entry

  • Spatial Awareness: Understanding filling lanes, eliminating tunnel vision, finding space

  • Conditioning with a Purpose: High-tempo transitions and full-sheet flow drills
